Is it plausible to get elected to public office while spending less money than what the job pays?

It is rare that a candidate pays for a campaign out of his own pocket. He raises money for the campaign from supporters including individuals, corporations, and special interest groups. The office holders salary is irrelevant to the campaign funds necessary to run a successful campaign.
