What is the Gilded Age?

The term gilded age was coined by Mark Twain. It was simply a time in American history, roughly from the end of the Civil War until about 1900 when everything appeared to be going good for the U.S. However, Twain said there were many internal problems which were just being covered up or ignored, much like gild (gold paint) covers up flaws.
