Questions about getting permit?

My 15 birthday is soon so I was planning on getting my permit, but a friend told me that I needed proof of enrollment from school. School is over so I can't get anything from my school. Can I just show the guy at the DMV my student I.D card? Why do I need proof of enrollment?
